Home: My True Colors

I have caught myself reading happily “Interiør Magazinet”(Scandinavian interior magazine) and thought: “Times have changed. Before I used to bury my head in InStyle and other fashion papers”. Is it how adulting looks like? 🙂

I love that Scandinavian magazine. I love their choice of homes, the minimalism, the color palette of whites, grays and quiet blues. When I raise up my head from the pictures, I start noticing the beauty of the everyday detail around me. But as much as I love Scandinavian style of living (and would love to channel that style on my blog), I find myself in the eclectic home, made up by my Catalan man and my Spanish dreams :)) So, maybe, one day my home will be emulating that tranquil minimalistic Scandi attitude – but today I share the mix and fusion that I find at home. Bringing out my true color :))

Home: my true colors

Some years ago I went to Malaga for the summer course and fell in love with the aesthetics of Andalusia. This is how I had seen Spain in my childhood dreams: guitars, flamenco dresses, black-eyed senoritas. I got a dream then – to buy a collection of local posters, fans and postcards and create my own corner alá Andaluz (olé Alndaluz :)). Two years later I was back to Malaga to buy its images of strong dancing ladies and an old-style poster with the seller pressing your name onto it.

I am a collector by nature, but the life tries to teach me the lesson of minimalism, it seems 🙂 With all the moving, changing my lifestyle, I start to appreciate the values of minimalism and do some efforts on decluttering. Like getting rid of the old magazines which have travelled with me through five different addresses. Sometimes I am good at it, other times – not so much 🙂

I view myself as a hungry Soviet child (more is more) trying to learn the joyfulness of minimalist living (less is more). As long as I enjoy the learning process, everything is fine.   I appreciate the simple solutions, empty clean corners and coziness created with few things. I love the green plants being on trend now and hope this trend will stay with us.

Our home is a mix of masculine and feminine (I guess, just as our personalities are). I view it as a good thing, that yin-yang balance at work, hehe – though it doesn’t look as clean as the interiors of the magazines 🙂 Some corners are more his, some are more mine (you can easily guess which).

Recently I fell in love with the idea of the fusion lifestyle. I guess, our home is just the reflection of it, a Scandi-Spanish fusion. A mix of minimalism, maximalism, hygge, coziness and colors.

And what kind of values are reflected in your home? What are its true colors?

  1. Oh my! I have no colors at all in my home!
I’m more of creme color and soft brown wood lover! I can’t wait for the day to buy a new home and style it exactly the way I want it! 😀

    • How come? I thought, every Slavic person must have something vibrant or shiny at home :)) Ok ok, just joking. Your taste sounds very Scandinavian to me, with all the cremes and wood love. Have you become interior inspired while living in Denmark? I believe, they have very inspiring homes, the Danes!

      • My mum did a lot typical Slavic crocheting and used many colors.
I do like it that though. I will have to ask her to make me some.

You’re originally from Ukraine right? Do you do the same over there?

I like danish design if it would be just a little less modern. I like a “homely” , warm feeling too to have in my house.

      • I am Ukrainian, right. My mom didn’t do any of this, she was more into checking flats and houses on sale, kinda masculine vibe 🙂 I did crocheting as a kid, so much fun. But I wouldn’t do it for my home now – I would feel like a granny :)) Not yet, at least :))

I love Scandinavian design, but yes, sometimes it gets kinda cold. Well, I wonder why… :))

  2. Interesting post! I love colors too. Your home looks really tidy, inviting, cozy and vibrant 🙂 Well done!
Since we don’t the apartment where I am staying at with my boyfriend, we haven’t decorated it as much as we’d like to. But the dominating colors are gray and white. I love the white furniture, and boyfriend loves the gray ones. Although overall, the apartment feels definitely more masculine than feminine. I’ve added some colors recently by hanging a bunch of colorful solar lights on the balcony and adding some plants. One day when we own our own place, we can decorate how we want, and it will definitely be more colorful than now. I grew up in a culture where colors are seen everywhere, and I definitely enjoy it.

    • Thank you, Pooja!
Your home sounds a bit Scandinavian, tranquil, white and gray. Did you get inspired by your living in Finland? 🙂 It must be such an interesting mix, your Nepali (right?) background where everything is so vibrant, colorful and intense, in my imagination, at least 🙂 – plus your experience of living around Europe which is more tamed and colorless. I wonder, how your dream home would look like!

      • It is interesting indeed, Marina! I love the Scandinavian indoor decor and designs, but in terms of fashion and outdoor architecture, I love colorful, probably an influence of my Nepali background. I haven’t really even thought about my dream home to be honest! But now it makes me wonder. 🙂

      • Start dreaming and I hope, we will see the result 🙂
I am a lover of Scandinavian design too, but it alone would be too classical and boring. I enjoy not being 100% from one place – and my tastes reflect that too :)) Yes to colorfulness and diversity!

  3. That Marina-poster is cute 🙂 I am sure we have talked about this, but I did a language course in Málaga, too, and loved it! (In 2002.) It was so much more SPANISH than I’d thought! Not international, not European, not touristy… but very localized. Such a lovely experience!
Our rented flat has a grey floor (looks exactly like your actually!) and white walls and cupboards. So those colors are dominant. We have hanged up a poster for an old surf movie called “The Endless Summer – the search for the perfect wave” and have some bright pops of color here and there. Our flower pots are lime/bright yellow, turquoise and blue, and those are my favorite colors, along with the green of the plants in them. Beachy is the vibe I would like, but hubby has also hung up some old skateboards of his and some travel photos. 🙂

  4. Love this post! I would like to think our new apartment will be a fusion of Scandinavian whimsy, modernism, nerdism (that is a word now) and my need for things to be cluttered chaos. I am too American to be minimalist. Lack of clutter actually causes me to feel really anxious. I’ve seen it in my art. The most “me” art works are cluttered with no white space left.

    • Thank you, Stiina! Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh, try to combine that Scandi minimalism with American maximalism! that would be an interesting project! 🙂
I too find it challenging to be pure minimalist. But moving in that direction (or playing with it) is actually fun and I like it! so far so good))

  5. I love it all, with Say my name for the win!

I have two living room (IKEA) shelves that are full of green things with two green paintings on the wall behind them. Other than that, our flat is like my blog: a bit crowded, a bit messy, full of colours but with a big heart. Not to mention dog hair.

Fusion in the direction to take and I love it how you two handle yours.

    • Thank you, darling! I guess, you too know how to create a fusion lifestyle 😉
I like green at home. I never liked green in my clothes but at home – love. Oh, and the sound of your flat is so full of life! Colors, heart – that’s what we need! Not only that Scandi streamlined perfect minimalism. Though it looks inspiring. But how do those people live there, I always ask 😆😆 where’s life?

  6. Your home looks lovely! It’s so interesting to see what different styles people have. Most of my furniture is grey with white walls everywhere but in our bedrooms. Our guest bedroom has pink walls because it used to be our daughter’s room and I wanted a marshmallow pink for that. Our son has one black wall otherwise white. Our bedroom walls are a powdery violet, it was supposed to be light grey but I got mixed up with the colors. All beds have grey bedspreads. Oh we do have a blue sofa upstairs! 😅

    • Thank you for the nice feedback 🙂 Yes, I love watching the living styles of people too 🙂
I love your color theme, it sounds very sweet and simple. Perfect for the lovers of Scandinavian minimalism like me :)) Thank you for popping by 🙂
