Happy Lists

There are days when I get so happy seeing different small things – and then I sit down and list them. Under the title “reasons for happiness”. The autumn sun in my window, the violet flowers on the balcony, the green plants inside, yoga in the morning, a pink coffee cup with a cactus on it…

There are days when I feel neither up or down. Somewhere inbetween, like today. Maybe, it is the sign of autumn, because I feel as my usual enthusiasm goes down to rest, together with the light and temperature. I had a short walk in my neighborhood and was thinking about a new blog post. Post about 5 things has been a while ago. A very long while ago. What can I write there? And then suddenly I start listing all the nice things I see and feel around.

I like the colorful facades of my neighborhood. I like my red coat. I like the smell of fresh pastry from the kiosk. That lovely corner with a cafe, flower shop and a hipster coffee bar. That older man from the flower shop, careful about detail, who once sold me a bouquet of eucalyptus. The freshly painted frame of a barber shop, now in bright yellow. A guy on the orange Vespa. The fact that Vespas are still on the streets.

Happy lists

And suddenly a neutral mood, slightly touched by an autumn melancholy, becomes a happy mood. Quiet happy, not vibrantly happy like in summer. But still – content and grateful.

To confirm this good effect I will sit down and make a blog post of my favorite 5 things of the moment. Maybe, if I do it more often, it will turn into a conscious habit. A habit of collecting reasons for happiness.

So, here are my five favorite things right now.

  1. My favorite pink cup with a cactus. I like how its light pink (a bit too light in this photo) plays with other pink details of my desk.

2. This little vase from Ikea and a simple composition of greens. It feels minimalistic and still lively.

3. Colorful details of my neighborhood. This one is from a tattoo salon. I like colors and I love pink :))

4. My red coat. I bought it on spring sale last year (Zara) and, luckily, its color is still trendy this autumn. I like wearing red in autumn and winter because it brightens up the day and my mood. During the warm summer I don’t care as much about colors – but in wintertime they serve as a color therapy to me :))

5. Colorful facades of my neighborhood, Grunerløkka. These ones are so pretty in pastel. They seem quite fresh too, here the facades are usually taken good care of. Except the graffiti that can be there for quite a long time.

Hope, you have many things on your happy lists! What are your “reasons for happiness” this season?

  1. I love the red coat! I will most likely dye my hair in slight red color. It suits the season 🍁

My biggest reason for happiness is starting a new life in a new country.
    New job. New people.

I am looking forward to make pumpkin soup and fresh baked bread.
To end the day with a cup of tea.
    Cinnamon candles.
    Long walks and chasing squirrels.

Ahh Autumn, you sooth my heart 😌

    • Oh, red hair is a great start for autumn :))
I love your list and mostly the things to cook and bake (which I don’t 🙊😆). Cinnamon candles sound so good! And so scandi :)) must try it for myself!
Enjoy your autumn and your fresh start!

  2. So lovely!! 🙂 I’m currently most grateful for this sunny September and all the delicious summer fruits that are still out there… 😀
I have this habit that when I’m drinking wine alone (which I do once in a while just because), I always drink to something, and so I end up with a long list of things I’m grateful for that and don’t necessarily think about often… it has the same effect, I go straight from neutral to content happy 😀 I might try yours though, sounds more ”in the moment” like!

    • Oh, nice idea! Sounds like a Russian habit to toast every time for something. Saying “Na zdorovje” is so wrong, we don’t do it!😆😆
Drinking wine is just like drinking water it some countries – you need no excuse and no company. I usually just drink without thinking – but I totally love your habit and want to try it myself. Hmm, maybe even today?))

      • Oh is it?! 😀
I guess I am in the right country for just drinking, France is that kind of a culture 🙂 I don’t know why I started it, I think I just needed a bit of gratitude to keep me going, but it’s a good one to try, the combination with good wine works wonders every time 😀

      • Right, la belle France is all about sipping wine casually. I love it! Where I come from, the Soviets, drinking alone is looked upon like you have a problem. well, cuz people drink vodka not wine. So yes, fair enough.
But sipping on red on a dark chilly night…alone… what can be better? (mmm, I go get myself a glass right now :)))

  3. Love this post! Oh your mug is soooo pretty. I’ve been loving baby pink since spring this year and bought a couple of clothing in that color 🙂 I love autumns! And especially sunny autumns. I love the colors of the trees and the chilly evenings and mornings, eating a hot bowl of ramen, candles and the coziness, I just love autumn!

    • Oh, thank you for your love, Pooja! It makes me so :))
I used to love fuchsia but I came to learn all shades of pink. So happy that it is on trend. Many pink things out there yet!!
I also love autumn, though sometimes it hits me back with a melancholy like an unruly sister :))

  4. Lovely post, Marina!! I’m also a bit ambivalent about autumn… on one hand, I love the pretty changes around, how everything turns golden and brown and life seems to get a bit slower… but on the other, the cold and the dark make me a bit melancholic too… I think it’s better since I started with photography! It makes me look at everything with different eyes and search for the little beautiful things around 🙂 it helped me a lot when I was living in Ireland (there the whole year was like a loooong autumn)!! And right now I’m just planning trips to the mountains and waiting eagerly to the chestnut season to start again…. 🙂

    • I am totally on the same line with you. When autumn is just dropping hints, I am all “oh so sweet. Colors and teas soon”. but then it unkindly hits me with melancholy, and I go wtf again :)))
Oh, you are so right! Photographing sharpens the eye, and when I set out in search for beauty I usually find it. And autumn can be truly a beautiful season, even when it’s rainy (especially when it’s rainy)).

  5. I love the mug and the red coat! I love autumn/fall weather. We don’t get it much of it here in Texas so when it does stick around for a bit I really enjoy it. I love being able to cozy up with a good book, a mug of coffee or tea (lately I’m loving a good chai latte), having the fireplace on…

  6. I don’t care about trendy any which way (in fact, I loathe the word, it’s right up there with “potential” and “ambitious”), but this coat is gorgeous and so are you. It’s a great practice to be mindful of happy things around me. It would do me good too, often. And you make even pink look classy. 😉

    • Thank you, Manja! Red is really one of the best colors, especially in the darker time, it makes everything pop :)) And pink, oh, I cannot talk quietly about pink, I just love it :))

Hehe, I love checking trends and fashion. Maybe, after some years of work with fashion and design I got so curious. In my age I am more for timeless style than ever-changing fashion. But I always make sure to check new collections in stores and analyze the trends (and ask myself what can work for me). It is a fun hobby :))

  7. Nice sunny mood you have, good for you!
As you may have guessed, I’m not a fan of the seasons heading towards winter… but that’s life. Gotta find something positive in it! 😀
I’m your Color Opposite (not Blogging Twin this time!!): Red is not my color, nor pink, and summer makes me dress more colorfully than winter. And I don’t care for trends or trendiness though I do care about what I’m wearing. But I can see that red is definitely your color and you look so comfortable in it! 👍:)
    Fun post, Marina!

    • This autumn has been the sunniest so far! I even was on the balcony couple of times 😎
I am with you on that season mood. Even if I like autumn aesthetics I can feel how I am getting lazier and ready for hibernation)))
Oh, Color Opposite sounds fun. What are your colors? I guess, you have a different match also because you are blond. That kind of red overshadows the blonds, so usually it is not to be found often in Norway. That’s I am happy about its trendiness – cuz it’s everywhere, in every store! After many years of grays and pastels – so I go wiii 😆😆

      • Yeah, I even took a color analysis with a friend once (she was practicing after her stylist course, and now she is kinda strict about which color I should wear around my face, haha). I guess, blue and green go better with your blond hair, and intuitively you steer away from the combination that is not fitting you.
